The museum
THE “TRADES OF YESTERYEAR” MUSEUM, iron museum, THE “AGES OF LIFE” SHOW
- The "Trades of yesteryear" museum"
The museum presents a collection of more than 120 trades and 6,500 tools. It is all the history of these tools from the past, the gestures of our forebears and their craft secrets that is offered to you here, for the pleasure of the young and not so young alike.
There is a tour that allows you to learn all about five major groups of trades:
- in the “village square”, itinerant trades such as knife-grinders, hawkers, the "peillarot" or rag-and-bone men who travelled the roads from village to village.
- the “farming world” with a range of trades, going from the wheelwright who made the wheels for carts, to harvest-time when they were harnessed up.
- the “domestic life” of our forefathers with the tap-makers, broom-makers, or the tinkers and glass-blowers... A 19th century kitchen, recreated to present some of the utensils typical of country life, such as the "toudheille" which was used to make “millas” (a sort of maize-flour cake).
- through the area dedicated to the "habitat": tile-maker, brick-maker, thatcher, nail-maker...
- and the last area devoted to “clothing” with the spinner, washerwoman, ironer, glover, dress-designer or maker of combs and horn objects.
- Iron museum
The Iron Museum represents, par excellence, the memory of Ariège’s mining and steel-making past. Every stage – starting from iron ore extraction through to how the end-product is used – is presented with contemporary texts and documents, photos, as well as objects and tools.
The world of the Tilt-Hammer Forge at Martinet is reproduced here in great detail and explained clearly thanks to the various mock-ups on display. Here you will be able to find out all about the history of iron and its importance for the economy and society of the Ariège of old.
- “The ages of life” show
This original, moving show takes you back through the life and times of Baptistou, aged 85. It conjures up the different aspects of his life in Ariège for Marion, his great granddaughter, through its key moments: birth, celebrations, feast days, not to mention music and traditions... through to the ultimate step in life!
