The New Town
Set out to discover a remarkable town...
The “Place aux Couverts” – the square flanked by timber-framed arcades in the centre of the old part of Mirepoix – remains not only the town’s administrative and economic hub, it is a place for exchanges, meeting people and relaxing too. It is also the town’s festive centre that serves as the setting for numerous events, and for the markets held every Monday and Thursday.
The “Maison des Consuls”: this is the largest and noblest building in the square and from 1500 this was the seat of the town’s Councillors. It is the only one to have more than a hundred enigmatic sculptures, typical of mediaeval imagery.
The seven-arches bridge: in the 18th century, the architect Jean Rodolphe Perronet built a bridge with seven basket-handle arches between 1766 and 1791. This magnificent structure stretches across the Hers over a length of 206 metres.
The “Maison Clauzel”: Bertrand Clauzel, born in Mirepoix, was an Empire General, ennobled in 1812, Governor General of Algeria, he received his Marshall’s Baton in 1832.
The current Town Hall house: the Town Hall was moved in 1806 to this old house.
The “Béal”: this canal used to bring water from the Hers to the mills of Mirepoix.
The “Maison Malroc”: this 18th century mansion belonged to the town’s first Consul. This historic residence currently houses the Hôtel**** Le Relais Royal.
