The Cathare settlement

In 1204, Raymond de Péreille had the Montségur castrum (fortified village) rebuilt at the request of the Cathar Church. The vestiges of this village can be seen at the summit of the mountain around the present-day castle.

Montségur is the only “Cathar Castle” where you can still see the last traces of the houses in which a large Cathar community lived for forty years. On the other sites the houses were rebuilt on the spot, but at Montségur a new village was built elsewhere on a different site (today’s village).
